TREES of Gujarat”

Today the technology has reached a stage where if one would want to show their work the communication is just one click away. The best platform to publish one's efforts is through internet. Therefore when I started the project to work on Trees of Gujarat state instead of prepare a heavy book on trees I thought, I should prepare a program for major trees forms of Gujarat. Under the guidance of my teacher Prof. Yogesh T. Jasrai as a starting effort I have prepared the data on trees of Gujarat and prepared an easy to use identification method. Tree plays an effective role in the urban environment by supporting many fundamental sub-systems like hydrological cycle, nutrient cycle, atmospheric gas balance, climate in the surrounding and others. It is sometimes surprising how trees can survive the artificial and adverse conditions under which they grow. Air pollution is one of the most challenging global issues of the 21st century. It will touch everyone and needs to be addressed on a time scale unlike anything human kind has ever undertaken. A good number of tree species have successfully been found to withstand and mitigate air pollution hazards. In developing countries, the use of synthetic drugs is at its peak but majority of the people still rely upon traditional system of medicine for health care. Countries like India and China had their own well developed traditional system of medicines. Ayurveda is the oldest system of healing in the world. During recent studies in Gujarat state 1315 medicinal plant species are documented. Tree species like Neem (Azadirachta indica), Baheda (Terminalia bellirica), Amla (Emblica officinalis) etc are known world wide for their medicinal uses. Even if a single tree falls or is felled the community loses a worth more than Rs. 32 lakhs.

Ph. D. (Botany)

Already lots of work have been done Trees of Gujarat and documented in form of books, journals, thesis, floras etc which helped me to assist my work. The extensive field work has been done to collect the information about trees and photographs have been taken during different phenological stages. With help of forest department it has been easy to access remote places to study flora. The database will cover almost all available data for each tree species, so that it will help not only in correct identification of a species but provide all available information about that species. The study is restricted to tree forms available in Gujarat state including various aspects of bioinformatics but later on it can be expanded for other plant forms also.
